Service

3D laser scanning and reverse engineering of existing fixtures

Many fixtures and grippers in production are undocumented or out of date: worn, shimmed, repaired after crashes or adapted over the years. We capture their actual condition by 3D laser scanning and turn it back into accurate CAD models and drawings.

When

When a scan pays off

  • No or outdated 3D data for the fixture
  • Worn, shimmed or repaired tools
  • Reuse instead of buying new
  • Modification for a new part or process
  • Current cell layout as a basis for simulation

Approach

From scan to CAD model

  1. On-site scanDuring a production window, e.g. a shift break or weekend
  2. ProcessingPoint-cloud registration and meshing
  3. As-built CADSolid models for new parts, mesh for the surroundings
  4. Function analysisLocators, clamps and media
  5. Target CADOptional: modification design
  6. ComparisonDeviation report scan vs. CAD

Deliverables

What you receive

  1. Point cloud (e.g. E57) and mesh (STL)
  2. Native CAD model and STEP
  3. Drawings and bill of materials
  4. Deviation report scan vs. CAD

What we need

What we need on site

  • Access to the station in an agreed time window
  • A secured, stationary station during the scan
  • A contact person on site and any existing documents

Metrology

The right equipment for each task

Depending on the task, we use a metrology-grade handheld scanner for fixture details and a terrestrial laser scanner for the cell and its surroundings. We agree the required accuracy with you before the scan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the station have to stop for the scan?

The station must be accessible and secured while we scan. We plan the scan into your production window, for example a shift break or a weekend.

How accurate is the result?

Achievable accuracy depends on the scanner, the surface and accessibility. We define the requirements together beforehand and document the result in the deviation report.

What happens to the scan data?

You receive all raw data and results. On request, we work under NDA and delete our working copies after the project.

Discuss your project

Send us a short description, photos or existing data – via the form or to info@grabet.eu. We will get back to you with an initial assessment of scope, approach and timing.
